Getting Started
Laura accepts students from age 4. Younger beginners start with shorter 30-minute lessons focused on building a love of music, correct hand position, and early note reading. Laura's patient teaching style is well suited to young children.
The trial lesson is a relaxed 20-minute session where Laura meets the student, assesses their current level (if any), and discusses goals with parents. There's no obligation — it's simply a chance to see if Laura's teaching approach is the right fit for your child.
Absolutely. Many of Laura's students start as complete beginners. She has a structured approach for new students that builds technique, reading, and musicality from the very first lesson. No prior experience or instrument ownership is required to start.
Lessons & Practice
For beginners aged 4–7, 30-minute lessons work best as young children's attention spans are shorter. Students working through AMEB grades typically benefit from 45-minute lessons. Advanced students, or those preparing for auditions or VCE Music, should consider 60-minute sessions to cover repertoire, technique, and theory in depth.
Laura provides specific practice guidance for each student. As a general guide: beginners benefit from 15–20 minutes daily, intermediate students 30–40 minutes, and advanced students 45–60 minutes or more. Consistency matters more than duration — regular short sessions are more effective than occasional long ones.
AMEB Exams
AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) exams are the national standard for graded music assessment in Australia. They provide structured goals and recognised qualifications. Laura prepares all exam students thoroughly — her students have a 100% pass rate. Exams are encouraged but not compulsory; some students prefer to learn for enjoyment.
Practical Info
Yes. Laura offers online lessons via Zoom or FaceTime for students who can't attend in person. Online lessons work best for intermediate and advanced students who already have a basic foundation. A stable internet connection and a device positioned to show the keyboard are all that's needed.
Laura asks for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations. Lessons cancelled with sufficient notice can be rescheduled within the same term where possible. Lessons are committed on a weekly basis with a minimum 3-month term.
Students need access to a keyboard or piano for daily practice. A weighted 88-key digital piano is ideal for beginners — Laura can recommend suitable models at various price points. An acoustic piano is preferable for students at intermediate level and above.
Yes. Laura is fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese and can teach in either language, or a mix of both. This is particularly helpful for younger students or families where Mandarin is the primary language at home.
